Photowalk in Vyšehrad - May 2026

The weather in May kept surprising us with sudden heatwaves. We met under Táborka, one of the main entrances to the beautiful Vyšehrad. We hopped for an ice cream at the okenko, to get some energy, in between the botanical garden fences, the historical Spicka and a sweet little charity shop (Boruvka). Vysehrad is one of those places in Prague that you have to make a point of visiting. Nestled between the southern banks of the Vltava, it is often overlooked by the maddening tourist crowds, as it is a bit further down.
Its sweeping views, stunning basilicas and immense cultural significance to the city are certainly second to none. We reached the Devil’s Columns. According to a story from around 1700, a priest once made a bet with the devil that he would celebrate Mass before the devil could bring a column from St Peter’s Basilica in Rome. We then split up for about 30 minutes to take photos at our own pace.
Some people might feel uneasy walking around this place or might not know what to photograph, but it soon became one of our favourite places in Prague. At the cemetery, time does not stand still. It’s a resting place, but it also feels like a history lesson about these Czech lands. The gilded and blue ornaments on the vaults contrasted with the dryness of the flowers and plants, some of which had long been forgotten. Some of the statues seem to follow you with their eyes, as if they are coming to life. They have a dynamism that is hard to ignore
In the smallest alleys, covered in moss and pink, you can catch a glimpse of the basilica’s cross, an ornamental plaque with century-old typography, or even the living. Passing by the statues of Libuše and Přemysl, two of the rulers of the Bohemian crown for centuries, we thought of her prophecy: ‘I see a great city whose glory will touch the stars.’ (referring to Prague). Libuše was known to see into the future.. We met up again for a quick, refreshing drink at our beloved Bistro Vyšehrad, where we reflected on the last couple of hours while looking through our photozine dedicated to this mythical place.
A few photos from the photowalk, taken by some of our participants.
